Paste Wood Fillers & Glazes

BEHLEN PORE-O-PAC OIL-BASED PASTE WOOD FILLER

pastefiller_page

Use Behlen Paste Wood Filler (oil-base) for filling open pored woods (oak, ash, walnut, mahogany) to provide a smooth, glass-like surface for subsequent coats of finish. Produced is formulated in heavy viscosity and can be reduced if necessary for more workability with Pore-O-Pac reducer. Remove excess filler with rubber squeegee, then burlap. QUART CAN.

Available in 3 colors, this product provides a smooth base for finish topcoats. Product is compatible with most other finishes, including lacquer, polyurethane and our water base products (when fully dry). Many finishers prefer to use filler over a light washcoat such as 1 lb. cut dewaxed shellac or thinned sealer or finish. Natural is used to make a custom color. Use our Cal Tint Colors for this purpose. See samples below.

behlen_poreopacreducer

Behlen Pore-O-Pac Reducer is a solvent to reduce the thick filler to a more workable consistency. While experienced paste filler users may not need it, it does help novices to apply the product for their first time. Recommended ratio is 4 parts filler to 1 part reducer. Reducer is also handy for removing semi-dried filler that you might miss.

#2054 – Quart Behlen Pore-O-Pac Reducer – $23.95

Our Grain Filler Spreader/Leveler is used to help remove the filler. Burlap is typically used afterwards to remove the excess that’s left. One square yard is plenty for 6-12 applications.

#1134 – Genuine Burlap – $4.25/yd

BEHLEN PORE-O-PAC MEDIUM BROWN WALNUT WOOD FILLER

dark_bartley_web
(Top = No Washcoat, Bottom = 1 lb. Cut Shellac)

Use this dark filler on any wood to really emphasize the grain. To keep the intermediate grain areas as light as possible use a washcoat (1 pound cut dewaxed shellac or finish thinned to about 10% solids).

BEHLEN PORE-O-PAC MAHOGANY PASTE WOOD FILLER

The filler is a warmer brown color than the Medium Brown Walnut that will add warmth to walnut and mahogany, particularly when not used with a washcoat.

The Natural Filler is formulated to dry translucent and fill the grain without adding any color. Under some finishes it may show as a whitish color so test it on darker woods like walnut and mahogany. Typically the Natural is used by finishers who like to custom tint their colors (with our Cal Tint colors). Wash coating has little aesthetic effect, though it does make the filler easier to wipe off cleanly. Another way to get some lighter effects is to add some oil based stain to the natural (Minwax is one example).

There are many ways to apply oil based paste wood filler. We prefer to use the following method.

1. Stain the wood if you wish. You can use any type of stain that you wish, dye, wiping stain, gel stains etc. Allow to dry completely
2. Apply a washcoat of 2 lb cut dewaxed shellac or use lacquer sanding sealer if applying a solvent lacquer like Behlen Qualalacq. Vinyl sealer can be substituted if your schedule uses it. Allow the seal to dry.
3. Sand lightly with P320 stearated sandpaper. Go lightly and do not cut through the sealer or filler
4. Apply the thinned filler (4 parts filler, 1 part reducer) with a brush and remove the excess with a squeegee/leveler or plastic scraper going at a 45 degree angle to the grain.
5. Let the filler dwell just long enough so that it “hazes” – typically 15 minutes or so. If the filler is drying too rapidly you can slow it down with some mineral spirits.
6. Remove the excess filler with burlap or a terry cloth type towel using it across the grain at first. Then finish up very lightly in a circular motion.
7. If filler is hard to remove in some areas because it has set up, moisten a rag with a small amount of Naphtha and remove lightly.
8. Allow filler to dry 48 hours. If waterborne or oil based finishes are used as the topcoat we recommend sealing the dry filler with one more application of dewaxed shellac first.
