All products are pre-tested here before they’re shipped out and they come complete with supplemental instructions written by us to get you up and running or for future troubleshooting.
QualSpray Spray Guns
The most common question we’re asked is “How do I choose a gun”? Generally you can make your choice based upon your compressor size, the materials you want to spray and the type of projects.
Compressor size – your compressor should have a CFM (or SCFM) specification of how much air it can produce. This is stated in the manual, or most of the time on a plate on the compressor. Compressors usually give 2 ratings, one figure at 90psi or higher and another at 40 psi. The one you should use for spray equipment is the 40 psi one. That number should be equal to or slightly higher than the CFM measurement of the spray gun.
Materials you want to spray – are you spraying woodworking or automotive finishes. Primarily waterbased or solvent based? Do you want to be able to spray paints (latex and oil)?
Type of projects – are you doing architectural spraying or spraying furniture. Do you primarily do kitchen cabinets? Do you spray the same material all the time or are you constantly changing from stain/dye to sealer then clears.

TYPES OF SPRAY GUNS
Conventional Pressure Guns – conventional, older style guns are simply high pressure spray guns. They use higher pressure of around 35 to 55 psi to atomize finishes. The high pressure at the tip (where the finish exits the gun and is impinged by the air) breaks up the finish nicely but leads to excessive overspray so a lot of material is wasted. High pressure guns are still favored by some finishers because the break up certain finishes so well and lay them down smoothly. Automotive finishers still like to use high pressure guns. We do not sell any high pressure spray guns.
HVLP Guns – HVLP sands for High Volume/Low Pressure guns. This technology was first used in turbine drive systems like Accuspray and Fuji. HVLP produces less material waste because the air pressure is reduced at the point in impinges on the finish (a tip pressure of 10 psi or less) which reduces blow-back and overspray and at least 65% of the finish lands on the piece (called transfer efficiency). QualSpray HVLP guns are the AM-6008/HVLP series.
LVLP Guns – are a hybrid of HVLP, also called Low-Cfm. To allow folks that have smaller compressors (under 8 cfm at 40 psi) engineers designed a special type of HVLP called LVLP (Low Volume/Low Pressure). In LVLP guns, the atomizing ports in the aircap horns and around the center hole are much smaller (see photo below). These smaller holes accelerate the lower air supply of the compressor to break up the finish. LVLP guns have a very soft spray pattern like HVLP but are not as fast (usually not an issue unless you do production work). LVLP guns are very good at detail work, small project work, and finishing at home (very soft spray and low overspray) QualSpray LVLP guns are the QS-125WB, QS-600WB, AM-6008LVLP and the AM-5008 series.
RP Guns – RP stand for reduced pressure. There are also called High Transfer Efficiency (HTE) guns. A reduced pressure gun operates in a similar manner to a conventional high pressure gun but a reduced inlet pressure of 35 psi. The air caps are engineered in a way to operate at a tip pressure higher than 10 psi (the mandated limit for HVLP) but at a lower air inlet pressure setting than a conventional spray gun. They still deliver transfer efficiency of 65% or greater. Reduced pressure guns are finding favor among finishers who prefer old style high pressure guns and didn’t like the lower tip pressure (softer sprays) and slower delivery rates of HVLP and LVLP. Reduced pressure guns will atomize clear finishes the best and can provide faster delivery rates of finish. One nice quality of our RP guns is that you can operate the gun at a lower pressure like 20-25 and get 7 or 8 psi tip pressure like an HVLP/LVLP gun! Our Reduced pressure guns also require small compressors, just like the LVLP guns. QualSpray RP guns are the AM-2012RP series.
QS SERIES HVLP GRAVITY DETAIL/TOUCH UP GUN
QS-125WB – We asked our factory to design us a radically different detail gun that could act like a larger one when it came to spraying waterborne and solvent-borne clears. Now you can get a gun that’s just as good as spraying thinner viscosity finishes for touch up and detail work, and spray clears without thinning. This new addition has an all stainless steel finish travel path (see description below for QS-600WB), in addition to the stainless used on the nozzle and needle. Plus it only needs 4 cfm to run. The 1.2mm will spray clear finishes without thinning unless they are pretty thick. The 125cc cup will hold about 4 ounces of finish, but larger cups are available as an optional upgrade if you need it. Spray Gun comes with a 2 year warranty. I used the spray gun today, to apply USL to unfilled walnut; all I can say is the gun exceeded my expectations. My pancake compressor was able to keep up and the volume of finish from the gun was impressive. In the past, I’ve been a little heavy handed when spraying finishes, which is why I’ve stuck to brushing, but this gun laid down a nice even finish despite operator inexperience. After just three quick coats, and I’m left with a finish that looks like it had the grain filled, and will only require a minor rubout. In short, I’m one satisfied customer.
